A hydraulic tensioner is a reactionary device that is integral to the engine timing chain system. The energy from input sources is captured in the hydraulic spring feature of the tensioner, and then it is released back into the system to provide chain tension and system control during periods of zero input. Next, a pressure relief valve provides a tensioner with a two-stage leakage, which is a major variable for containing and dissipating energy to maintain tension levels. When contamination is contained in the engine oil entering the tensioner and trapped into the valve, the function of the pressure relief valve and the hydraulic stiffness of the tensioner is reduced. To prevent this from happening, we have developed a mesh filter. Through this paper, we would like to introduce the correlation between contamination and pressure relief valve functions, and share the data necessary for selecting filter specifications to prevent functional degradation due to contamination. |
