초록 Although the Toyota Prius is known for its impressive fuel economy (FE), it suffers from poor acceleration performance (AP). To enhance the performance of sports utility vehicles (SUV) and high-performance models, larger components and a transmission are used. However, this performance improvement is limited because the Prius input-split architecture can only utilize its small motor/generator (MG) as a generator. To tackle this challenge, this study proposes combining the Prius input-split system with fixed gear (FG) parallel modes. The input-split mode can guarantee an outstanding FE while the FG modes can improve AP by amplifying power through using both MGs as motors. All potential placements of clutches and speed reduction/multiplication gears are systematically explored. A key contribution of this work lies in the pairing of clutches and gear ratios, a new design technique that enhances the design flexibility of FG modes. Additionally, to eliminate the redundancy within the physical design space, a virtual design space is introduced, featuring various combinations of virtual input-split and FG modes. The performance is assessed via the virtual design space considering FE, AP, and gradeability. An optimal virtual design that is 67.82% faster than the standard Prius with 5.56% better FE is selected and converted into feasible physical multi-mode architectures.
