This paper presents the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) development process for a small size ethanol 100% SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) engine designed for the emerging markets. Due to the high-octane rating of ethanol fuel, spark timing was advanced, resulting in significant combustion noise during acceleration and generating 0.5-order period impulsive and roughness noise. The crankshaft and main bearings were made thinner than previous engines to improve efficiency by reducing friction, limiting stiffness improvements. This leading to increased airborne noise and structure borne noise transmitted to the cabin via the engine RH MTG. To address these issues, various countermeasures, including spark timing and calibration optimization, crankshaft stiffness reinforcement, and increased crankshaft torsional damper inertia were implemented. Additionally, the high fuel pressure of the direct injection system caused ticking noise at idle, which was mitigated through fuel pressure and calibration optimization, and the application of PU foam on the high-pressure pump and upper side of intake manifold. The paper details these technical improvements and their impact on overall engine NVH performance. |
